Executive Summary
Education is inaccessible for millions of children worldwide who live in war zones or are affected by conflict. As building blocks of learning and self-development, literacy and numeracy acquisition are the key to unlocking these children’s potential and changing their future.
Can’t Wait To Learn (CWTL)—a custom-made educative gaming technology solution—has been developed through years of testing and research. Findings show that CWTL works; children learn, and they learn fast. The project team at War Child Holland designed it to tackle the specific challenges that children in different conflict settings experience: from the game design—which children co-created to ensure it is culturally, contextually, and curricula appropriate—to hardware designed for use in low-resource and harsh environments. The model demonstrates improved and faster learning outcomes and psychosocial benefits at a lower cost than other approaches and can offer a brighter future for millions of children.

2023 Swift Grant Awardee
War Child Holland will work with World Vision to scale scale War Child’s Can’t Wait to Learn self-guided, tablet-based primary educational program in Chad. This project aims to increase literacy and numeracy for children in hard to reach areas.
Accomplishments
In our newest co-creation partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, we have dramatically advanced one of the hallmarks of Can’t Wait To Learn: scalability.
We can now offer Can’t Wait To Learn for direct download from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon onto personal devices, Android and iOS. This significantly expands our reach to children in conflict, especially refugee populations living beyond country borders. Children can use Can’t Wait To Learn at home, in school, and in the community when non-traditional school is the safest and best option.
This is also a departure from our programme’s traditional model and scope. The software created for the Ukraine response will serve as a template for adapting to evolving needs in countries where we already operate, and in new contexts in other countries.
