Executive Summary
More than 80 percent—nearly 50 million people—of South Africa's population of 60 million rely on the public sector for their healthcare needs. But it is nearly impossible to gain general access to quality primary healthcare while faced with limited health professional resources, aging infrastructure, dated legislation, and under-utilized technology.
Over the past seven years, our bold and disruptive service delivery model known as the Unjani Clinic Network has empowered professional nurses to provide access to quality, affordable primary healthcare. At the same time, the network equips the nurses to operate and ultimately own container clinics in racially and economically isolated communities. More than 1.9 million consultations have been recorded through a network of 84 clinics in South Africa, and we plan to expand to 750 Clinics there. By enhancing access to quality healthcare, six million historically marginalized and economically isolated people will have improved health education, improved health outcomes, and improved lives.

Accomplishments
Unjani Clinical Network is well on the way to achieving our target of establishing 100 Clinics throughout South Africa by the end of 2021—a firm foundation for us to build more and scale up our model. To achieve those aspirations, Merck for Mothers has provided funding to create a blended finance model—shifting from a purely donor-funded model, test legal and tax structures to maximize the opportunity, and enhance the organizational design to prepare for scaling up our work.
